Abstract

<PICT:0856492/IV(a)/1> A method for the continuous curvilinear pleating of thermoplastic films comprises first subjecting the film to an operation producing rectilinear pleating transverse to the longitudinal direction of the film, and then advancing the rectilinearly pleated film while it rests loosely on a smooth support, the shape of which changes gradually from a level part to a part having a form corresponding to the desired curvature of the pleats, the film being heated during its advance to soften it so that the pleats curve to take the shape of the support owing to their own weight, whereafter the curvilinear pleating so produced is stabilized by cooling during the further advance of the material while it still rests loosely on the support. Apparatus as shown comprises an unrolling mechanism 2, 3, a heater 4 and rectilinear pleating mechanism 5, and a support having a level portion 6 just beyond the pleating mechanism and then gradually curving to a form corresponding to the generatrix desired for the curvilinear pleats 10, heaters 8, 9 being provided above and below the support at its zone of change of curvature and means preferably being provided beyond the heaters for promoting or delaying the cooling of the film to stabilize the curvilinear pleats (e.g. means for adjusting the support into various inclined positions so as to promote or retard the advance of the film). The support may be fixed, or an endless steel band may be used, made to curve in the same manner as a fixed support by suitably placed rollers. The rollers may be movably mounted so that the curvatures can be altered. The support may also consist of a series of parallel threads which are stationarily stretched, or endless, passing over rollers.
