Abstract
856,412. Pulse-echo testing systems. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. Aug. 19,1959 [Sept. 5,1958], No. 28307/59. Class 40(7). In a pulse-echo type of fault detector for electric cables signals due to irregularities in the cable 3 are supplied via a differential coupling device 5 to a stroke device 7 in which pulses from a generator 8 controlled by an oscillator 9 sample the echo signals and supply such samples to the vertical deflection plates of an oscilloscope 14 via amplifier 13. The frequency fr (oscillator 1 and pulse generators 2) of the pulses supplied to the cable and the frequency fe of the oscillator 9 and pulse generator 8 are so chosen with respect to the frequency of the highest spectral component f max in the output of device 7 that f max fr-fe/fr < fe where fr-fe/fr is the ratio in which the frequency of spectral component in the output of device 7 are reduced with respect to those of the echo signal. The horizontal deflection of oscilloscope 14 is produced by a saw tooth wave of frequency fr-fe in generator 12 controlled by a mixer 11 in which the difference signal is produced from the output of oscillators 1 and 9. The cable 3 and the other end of device 5 are terminated in impedances 4, 6 equal to the characteristic impedance of the cable and a measure of the total echo energy may be obtained from an integrating device 10.
