Abstract

855,976. Spectacle hinges. NEWBOLD & CO. Ltd., and NAPPER, J. W. June 19, 1959 [June 30, 1958], No. 20900/58. Class 97(1) Sprung hinge-joints automatically open spectacle-sides when the constraining pressure of pocket or spectacle-case is released. Referring to Fig. 1, each hinge, 4, has a coil spring around its pivot so as to open the spectacle sides to a position shown by 5 at which position sprung plungers 9 housed in the extremities of the spectacle-sides adjacent to the hinges engage the frame constraining further opening and holding the spectacle-sides firmly against the wearer's head. Additional retention is obtained by serrating the inward-facing surfaces of the spectacle-sides the latter also being suitably shaped to facilitate the placing of the spectacles in position on the head.
