Abstract

855,963. Purifying liquids. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 31, 1958 [Feb. 5, 1957], No. 3877/57. Class 46. [Also in Group II] A redistributer plate P for the continuous phase (shown in heavy arrows) of a liquid liquid-extraction column 2 comprises an annular device adapted to constrain the continuous phase to move through a central portion 8 of the column but permitting passage of the dispersed phase (shown in small arrows) through the device and the central portion. The device comprises a funnel shaped member 4 having its large end attached to and extending within the channel of an annular channel member 5. The column contains spaced sieve plates 3 above and below plate P, the aggregate area of the openings in each sieve plate being not greater than the area of the orifice 8. Turbulence created in the continuous phase due to its passage through the funnel-shaped member 4 produces a redistribution of the phase after passage through the device. Such redistribution may be augmented by baffle plates or a rotatable turbine wheel placed in the orifice 8.
