Abstract

Olefine oxides, e.g. ethylene and propylene oxides, are prepared by oxidation of the olefine in presence of a catalyst comprising a support impregnated with argentic oxide (AgO) and a promoter. The latter is selected from alkali metal and alkaline earth metal compounds, e.g. BaO2, while the support may be, e.g. "Alundum" (Registered Trade Mark), carborundum, pumice or mullite. The oxidation is effected with oxygen or air, nitrogen and carbon dioxide being mentioned as optional diluents.ALSO:A catalyst suitable for the oxidation of olefins to olefin oxides comprises a support, such as "Almdum" (Registered Trade Mark), carborundum, pumice or mullite, impregnated with argentic oxide (AgO) and a promoter selected from alkali metal and alkaline earth metal compounds, e.g. BaO2 The argentic oxide may be prepared by oxidation of AgNO3 electrolytically or with potassium persulphate in an alkaline medium, or by oxidising Ag2O with potassium permanganate.
