Abstract

855,615. Flue gas testers. LANDIS & GYR A.G. Dec. 8, 1958 [Dec. 10, 1957], No. 39506/58. Class 40 (1). A flue gas, or CO 2 tester, of the type in which the resistivity of a heated wire exposed to the flue gases is compared with that of a similar heated wire exposed to air, is adapted for use in a corrosive atmosphere by mounting the wires in compartments in a synthetic resin block. The block is preferably moulded from ethoxylene with quartz powder filler in two portions, the lower portion containing two flow chambers and the upper portion two measuring chambers. Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal section through a flow chamber 12 and measuring chamber 16 separated by an acid proof and temperatureresistant grid 17, the gases entering and leaving the chamber by holes 13 and 14 and diffusing to the measuring chamber through grid 17. Fig. 3 is a view from the underside of the upper block showing the two measuring chambers in which a platinum wire 22 is welded at each end to platinum tipped terminals 20 moulded into the block, the loop of wire being tensioned by a platinum-iridium spring 24, the spacing between the wires being maintained by glass block 27 moulded into the casing. A boss 28 is cast on to the roof of the chamber in order that, during assembly, the same length of wire may always be used by attaching one end of the wire to one terminal, passing the wire round boss 28, and then welding the other end to the second terminal, the loop then being removed from boss 28 and suspended from the tension spring 24.
