Abstract
855,561. Moulding ceramic materials. BENDIX CORPORATION, [formerly BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION]. Sept. 10, 1958, No. 29064/58. Class 87(2). The distortion of a hollow thin-walled ceramic cylinder during firing is reduced by bonding on to the end of the cylinder while it is still wet a ceramic end wall on which the cylinder rests during firing. A ceramic slip is forced into nipple 18a and passes through channel 13a and slots 13b in arbor 13 into a rotating plaster of Paris mould 10 where it is cast into a cylinder 20. The mould is removed from the arbor 13 when the cylinder 20 is semi-wet but selfsupporting and is positioned vertically with one end on a plaster of Paris slab. An end wall 22 is then slip cast and bonded on to the end of cylinder 20 so that it extends a small distance into the cylinder. When the casting 20, 22 is dry the end wall 22 is placed on a refractory slab 25 covered with refractory sand 26 and the casting is enclosed within a muffle 27. The assembly is then placed in a kiln, and fired. After cooling the wall 22 and a small portion of cylinder 20 are sawn off.
