Abstract

855,409. Type printing telegraphy. CREED & CO. Ltd. May 22, 1959 [May 28, 1958], No. 16974/58. Class 40(3). In a tape perforating apparatus there is provided tape run-out means for causing blank tape to be run out of the apparatus, and means for preventing tape run-out when a signal to be perforated is received, even though the run-out means is operated, and means for storing the first received signal so that the tape can be brought to rest before perforation. In the perforating head, punch interponents are positioned in accordance with the code combination by means of Bowden cables. Run-out mechanism, Fig. 7. On depression of the run-out key 76 an arm 77 lifts pin 79 in the direction R and pin 79 raises trigger 78, freely mounted on shaft 108, allowing a pawl 80 which is pivotally attached to a cam 87 to engage a ratchet 81 fixed to shaft 82. Shaft 82 rotates continuously. Cams 86, 87 are joined together by a sleeve 109 which is free to rotate on shaft 82. When the ratchet 81 is engaged the cams rotate with shaft 82, and a humped portion on cam 86 causes a rocker 111 to move in a direction H. A pin 89, fixed to rocker 111 thus moves a link 57 in direction F and this actuates the perforating apparatus to punch a feed hole. A spring returns link 57 to its rest position. The humped part of cam 87 causes link 19, 20, 21 to rotate in direction K about pin 116 and feed link 22 to move in direction G. The latter movement transports the tape by actuation of a sprocket wheel (not shown). Feed hole perforation and tape transport continue as long as key 76 is depressed except that when a signal to be perforated is received a relay moves pin 79 in direction Q. As the pin disengages from arm 78, the latter moves to engage pawl 80 so that cams 86, 87 now no longer rotate with shaft 82 so that feed hole perforation and tape transport cease. Storage unit, Fig. 6. Two sets of five control plates 122 are used, the plates of the sets being interleaved, and one set is arranged according to a first signal and the other set according to a second and succeeding signal. Each plate occupies the full line position for a space and the broken line position for a mark element. The control plates of one or other of the sets being located directly beneath projections 124 on code plates 44, when cam 125 allows rocket 121 to move downwards, code plates 44 move anticlockwise for a mark element, allowing rocker 31 to move clockwise and the core 36 of a flexible connection 37A to move to the right. Perforating mechanism, Fig. 5. Interposers, which when at rest are as 38 and when selected are as 40, are selected in response to movement of the cores in Bowden cables 37A, and on actuation of punch rocker 58 in direction A the interposers are all carried in direction C to select the punches; punch retracting plate 63 is also moved in the same direction. After perforation, the punch rocker is moved in reverse to withdraw the punches from the die plate, and a new combination of interposers is selected. Specification 794,091 is referred to.
