855.230. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS & TABULATORS Ltd. April 5, 1957 [May 1, 1956], No. 13371/56. Class 100(4) An auxiliary printing attachment for a record controlled printing machine has a printing member carrying a manually set symbol or symbols. Stationery 1, Fig. 1, is fed round a main platen 2 past a printing wheel 5 and between an auxiliary platen 3 and a printer 4. when a solenoid 16, Fig. 2, is energised an armature 17 rocks a lever 14 about 15 to depress arms 13 which push forward an arm 10 pivoted at 9 so that a stamp 8 hits the platen 3. Ink pad 18 is moved aside during printing by an abutment 19. Stamp 8 may be of rubber or type metal, in the latter case an ink ribbon may be used instead of an ink pad. The stamp may be replaced to change symbols or may carry type on movable bands or wheels. Energisation of the solenoid 16 is controlled by a machine function or by the stationery feed motion. The auxiliary printer may be mounted on the machine at any point relative to the main platen which suits the particular use required, e.g. signatures may be printed at the foot of a page simultaneously with the rest of the data, or the main platen and ink ribbon could be used for the auxiliary printer when symbols are required in the margin. Lateral movement of bracket 6, carrying plates 7 and solenoid 16, along platen 3 is also possible. Two or more stamps selectively operated may be used. Specification 704,764 is referred to.
