Abstract

The invention comprises carbamates of the formula: <FORM:0855210/IV(b)/1> (wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl radical), and the preparation thereof by (1) when R is hydrogen, reacting 2-endohydroxy bicyclo-(2 : 2 : 1)-5-heptene with cyanic acid or urea; or (2) when R is alkyl, reacting dehydronorcamphor with an alkyl lithium or an alkyl magnesium halide, reacting the so-formed 2-alkyl-2-hydroxybicyclo-(2 : 2 : 1)-5-heptene with phosgene to give the corresponding chlorocarbonate and then reacting this with ammonia. The compound wherein R is hydrogen may also be obtained from an ester of the unsubstituted bicyclic alcohol by transesterification with a lower alkyl carbamate in presence of an alkaline catalyst or by ammonolysis of a chloroformic acid ester. Examples are given, R variously having the values of hydrogen, methyl and butyl. Bicyclic alcohols from which the carbamates of the above general formula are derived may also be prepared by Diels-Alder addition of a conjugated diene, such as cyclopentadiene, with an ethylenic alcohol ester and subsequent hydrolysis of the ester adduct. They may also be prepared by lithium aluminium hydride reduction of the corresponding bicyclic ketones or esters. U.S.A. Specification 2,352,606 is referred to.
