855,179. Making gratings; jointing by forging; broaching. MENTIS, A. Oct. 14, 1958 [Oct. 10, 1957], No. 32712/57. Classes 83 (2), 83 (3) and 83 (4). In a method of making metal gratings, e.g. for flooring &c., having bearers 12 and crossstays 19, Fig. 4, bearers are assembled in parallel-spaced relationship, and simultaneous and repetitive operations are then carried out to cut notches 18 in the bearers 19, to insert and cross-stay in previously cut notches, and to press a previously-inserted cross-stay to deform the metal at the junctions to secure the cross-stay to the bearers. A carriage 13 straddles the bearers 12, which are supported on a slotted bed 11 and carries mechanisms 14-16. Mechanism 14 comprises a saw 17 which, during a traverse of the carriage, progressively cuts notches 18 and slightly undercuts the bottom of the notches with the broach-like trailing part of the saw. Mechanism 15 having a grip 21, simultaneously with the action of the notching-saw, engages a cross-stay 19 in previously-formed notches. Both mechanisms 14, 15, are retracted upwards on the return traverse of the carriage 13 by a spring 34 released by a cam 35. The joint is made at each junction between the bearers 12 and the cross-stays 19 by a series of swaging-blocks 29 resiliently mounted on a cross-member 28, the blocks 29 working in conjunction with anvils 31 which engage the bottom of the bearers and cross-stay. During the traverse of the carriage in both directions, a roller 24, held down by heavy supports 27, presses the swaging-blocks 29 into engagement with the junctions of the grating to deform the metal of bearers 12 and stays 19 about each other and to press the bottom of the stay into the bottoms of the notches 18, which shear slightly, a preformed thickening on the underside of the stay being thus caused to swell into the undercut-portions of the notches. After each traverse of the carriage the fingers 38, 39 feed the grating one step to the right, and a cutting-action, to sever a length of strip 19 from a roll, may be associated with the movement of the fingers. The carriage may be reciprocated by a rack-andpinion. The swaging-pressure may be applied by an hydraulic-jack or jacks or by the pressure-plate of a press.
