Abstract

854,944. Clothes driers. ROBERTSHAWFULTON CONTROLS CO. Feb. 4, 1959 [March 28, 1958], No. 3984/59. Class 34(2) In a tumbler drier having a closed air circulation system in which the hot moistuure-laden exhaust air passes through a curtain of cooling condenser water, the electric heater 34, Fig. 1, in the recirculating duct 26 is controlled by means within a box 66 dependent upon the temperature differential between the incoming condenser water and the discharging water and lint mixture. Temperature sensing element 88, 134 transmit temperature changes via expanding and contracting liquid in piping 86, 132 respectively, to elements 82, 126, the accumulative motion of which causes actuation of a lever 186 which, through a further lever 182 and a spring-loaded apertured plate 170, effects snap-over action of a spring-loaded arm 156 carrying a contact 146 between contacts 142, 144. A timer 196 is used to control the drier such that on starting up the switches 198, 200, 202, 204 are made and contacts 146, 144 are together. The heater 34, recirculation fan 32 and drum motor 18 are thus energized until a temperature difference exists between the elements 88, 134 when the elements 82, 126 combine to move the lever 186 to effect snap-over of the arm 156 such that contacts 146, 142 are closed. Once sufficient time has elapsed to ensure stable drying conditions the timer opens the switch 198 but the heater remains energized through the closed contacts 146, 142. The switch 202 opens next to break the timer circuit so stopping the latter. Drying continues until the temperature difference between the elements 88, 134 drops to a predetermined value when the contacts 142, 146 are opened and 144, 146 closed. The heater is then de-energized but the timer restarts until it breaks switches 200, 204 to de-energize the fan, the drum motor and itself to thus switch off the drier. The actuating temperature difference between the sensing elements may be predetermined by a pre-set knob 102.
