Abstract
854,858. Saw-tooth generating circuits; cathoderay oscilloscopes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 19, 1957 [Feb. 22,1956], No. 5602/57. Classes 40(6) and 40(7). In a time base circuit for a cathode-ray oscillograph, the deflection velocity is increased when the instantaneous value of the displayed voltage or its time derivative exceeds a certain value. As shown, valves 1, 2, 3 constitute a free-running time base wherein the velocity is governed by the anode current of the charging valve 1 which is controlled by the variable resistor 9 or the bias source 10. The circuit is synchronized by a pulse derived from the display waveform (terminals 13) by a pulse generator 12 and applied to the suppressor of valve 3, At the end of each sweep the time base capacitor 4 is discharged through valve 2 which is regeneratively coupled to valve 3. When the input waveform exceeds a certain level, the device 14 (not described) increases the suppressor voltage of valve 1 thus accelerating the sweep. The device 14 may contain a differentiating circuit to enable the expansion to be initiated by excessive rate of change of input voltage. The output of device 14 may alternatively be fed to a separate high-speed time base generator, the output voltage of which is superposed on that of the first saw-tooth generator.
