Abstract

854,825. Radioactive beads. CHININFABRIK BRAUNSCHWEIG BUCHLER & CO. June 19, 1957 [June 22, 1956 ; Aug. 10, 1956; April 30, 1957], No. 19293/57. Class 39(4). A radioactive bead having a central bore is formed with a recess in the solid body of the bead for accommodating radioactive material, the recess being closed after the material has been introduced. The beads may be strung on a thread and inserted in a body cavity to treat disease. As shown in Fig. 1 a spherical bead 2 has central bore 4 and an annular recess 6 which is closed by an annular ring 8 held in position by solder or cement. The ring 8 may itself be of radioactive material or may be provided with a groove for holding the material. In Fig. 5, (not shown), the recess is peripheral and is closed by a two-part ring. In Figs. 7-8 (not shown), a number of recesses closed by pins replace the single annular recess and are arranged in a circle or are disposed radially. Fig. 9 shows individual recesses 34 closed by a single ring 38. The head may be in two parts, e.g. as shown in Fig. 11, where the two parts 106, 108 are flitted together by means of a spigot and recess 171, forming an annular recess 107 which contains radioactive filament 170. One part of the head may have a cylindrical projection over which the other part is pushed or screwed. Fig. 18 shows a bead comprising a bored spherical body 119 and a hollow cylindrical part 120 having a groove 107 ; in modifications of this construction the position of the two parts is defined by providing the outer part with a shoulder or by making the contacting surfaces conical. The beads may be made of gold, platinum, ferromagnetic metal, synthetic resin, or ceramic material. The radiating material may be radium, or radioactive cobalt, caesium, iridium, or strontium.
