Abstract
854,797. Cables. ALGEMENE KUNSTZIJDE UNIE N. V. Dec. 3, 1958 [Dec. 24, 1957], No. 39047/58. Class 36 In a high-tension cable having a number of thin insulating layers of a solid organic artificial substance between the conductor and its sheathing, the layers being separated from one another only by oil, the layers consist of films or foils which are highly resistant to the action of the oil and have been finely scratched on at least one side so as to provide freedom of movement .for the oil. Examples of insulating materials are polymethylene terephthalate, polyethylene terephthalate, polyamides, polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, polybutadiene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, and cellulose ester, such as cellulose acetate, the material preferably having a dielectric constant close to that of the oil. The scratching is preferably effected by grinding discs which are traversed rapidly from side to side of the film as it is advanced slowly longitudinally. The film may alternatively be " goffered " so as to provide parallel rectilinear scratches across the film, the distance between the scratches being at least three times the depth of the scratch. The films may be preheated to reduce the tendency to shrink at the working temperature, and film-thickness may be graded. from the conductor outwards.
