Abstract
854,763. Pipe joints. A.E.I.-J. THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. March 10, 1958 [Dec. 10, 1956], No. 37718/56. Classes 99(1) and 99(2). A gas tight coupling between ducts 1, 3, Fig. 1, comprises mating chamfered surfaces on flanges 2, 4, arranged to form an annular duct 21, Fig. 3, clamped together by hook members 6 actuated by servo-motors 34 which are mounted on duct 1 and gas leaks are detected by feeding gas under pressure to the annular duct 21, means 24 responsive to the pressure in duct 21 indicating the efficiency of the seal and/or initiating operation of safety apparatus on seal failure. A control valve 11 feeds, by supply pipes 7, 8, each servo-motor 34 which through piston rods 37, Fig. 4, rotates plate 31 about pin 32 to cause link 31 to rotate the hook members 26 into clamping position. In a modification interconnected pairs of hook members 26 are operated by each servo motor 34 and the hook operating linkage may be arranged to form a toggle action locking arrangement which permits the supply of servo fluid to the servomotors to be cut off after the hooks have been moved into clamping position. Alarm apparatus can be provided, instead of or in addition to the pressure indicator 24, arranged to automatically prevent opening of the coupling so that safety apparatus may be actuated to remove inserted parts, e.g. fuel grabs in a reactor fuel channel, from the duct.
