Abstract
<FORM:0854538/IV(b)/1> Crude e -caprolactam containing not more than about 10% by weight of impurities oxidizable by potassium permanganate is purified by forming a mixture consisting essentially of caprolactam, water, and NaOH and/or KOH, the weight proportions of the three components lying within the quadrilateral on an equilateral triangular composition bounded by the lines connecting the points at (1% caprolactam, 69% alkali metal hydroxide, 30% water), (1% caprolactam, 19% alkali metal hydroxide, 80% water), (55% caprolactam, 5% alkali metal hydroxide, 40% water), and (93% caprolactam, 5% alkali metal hydroxide, 2% water) (see the Figure); bringing the mixture to 15-75 DEG C. to form two liquid phases, separating the caprolactam phase, and distilling caprolactam. The process may be made continuous, the alkali metal hydroxide solution being re-used. The caprolactam may be purified by freezing out of aqueous solution. In the Figure, the inner quadrilateral represents a preferred range of compositions.
