854,428. Change-speed control. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. Jan. 17, 1958 [Jan. 19, 1957], No. 1725/58. Class 80 (2). A control means for a motor vehicle changespeed gear comprises a knob 7 having a peripheral assymetry 10, the knob being rotatably mounted coaxially with the steering-column. The knob may be mounted on the boss of the steering-wheel, or on the steering column and the indicator device may comprise a nose 10, an indentation, or a light 27. Rotation of the knob may operate the gear selector directly through rigid or flexible linkage, or through screw-and-nut, operating through Bowden cable or rod, or through hydraulic, pneumatic or electric servo. The knob may have automatic, range-selecting, reverse and park settings, in which it may be located by manually or automatically released means such as a detent 32. Unauthorized rotation of the knob may be prevented by a lock which may be combined with an ignition lock.
