Abstract

The invention comprises water-soluble azo dyestuffs having at least one heterocyclic radical which contains at least one <FORM:0854158/IV (c)/1> group as part of the heterocyclic ring, attached by way of an amino group and also having at least one hydroxyl group esterified with sulphuric acid or with an aryl carboxylic acid containing at least one sulphonic acid group in the aryl radical, but no sulphonic acid groups linked in any other way. The dyestuffs are made by (a) esterifying an azo dyestuff containing at least once the heterocyclic radical and at least one free hydroxyl group with sulphuric acid or an appropriate aryl carboxylic acid, or (b) reacting an azo dyestuff containing at least once the esterified hydroxyl group and at least one primary or secondary amino group with a heterocyclic compound containing as part of the heterocyclic ring at least two <FORM:0854158/IV (c)/2> groups, or (c) coupling a diazo component containing at least once the heterocyclic radical with a coupling component containing at least once the esterified hydroxy group, or (d) coupling or diazo component containing at least once the esterified hydroxyl group with a coupling component containing at least once the heterocyclic radical, or (e) coupling a diazo component containing at least once the heterocyclic radical and at least once the esterified hydroxyl group with a coupling component free from sulphonic acid groups. Heterocyclic compounds containing at least two <FORM:0854158/IV (c)/3> groups are cyanuric chloride and phenyl dichlortriazine. The esterified hydroxy group may be attached to alkyl or aryl radicals. The dyes colour fibres of wool, silk, polyamides, leather and paper.
