Abstract
For determining when a gas sterilisation process is complete, there may be employed a device comprising an envelope permeable to said gas containing a liquid reagent reacting with said gas to produce a visibly detectable change with or without further treatment of said reagent. By suitably regulating the thickness of the envelope and the concentration of the reagent, the capsule will respond to the gas in the same time as the contaminating organism is destroyed by the gas. For use with ethylene oxide, a capsule containing an aqueous solution of magnesium chloride, hydrochloric acid may be used; a pH indicator (bromocresol purple, bromophenol blue) may be added to the contents of the capsule after exposure or may be included in the capsule: for methyl bromide there may be used a capsule containing ethanolamine and silver nitrate, the contents of which are added, after the desired contact with the gas, either to dilute nitric acid containing an adsorption indicator (phenosafranine) or to a solution containing nitric acid, ferric ammonium sulphate, ammonium thiocyanate and silver nitrate; for formaldehyde the capsule may contain methyl orange, hydroxylamine hydrochloride and sodium hydroxide. The capsule which is preferably transparent or translucent may be constructed of polythene or polyvinyl chloride. Other sterilisation gases referred to are sulphur dioxide and hydrogen cyanide.
