Abstract

854,115. Recording pens. MERO, P. G. S. Aug. 6, 1958 [Aug. 7, 1957], No. 25191/58. Class 146(3). [Also in Group XXV] A magnetic coupling system comprises a first magnetic coupling member having a convex contact surface, a second magnetic coupling member having a concave contact surface for receiving the convex. surface, means for establishing magnetic flux field linking the members to maintain the contact surfaces in engagement, and means for limitiing the coupling elements to relative angular movement comprising a non-magnetic member of annular configuration surrounding one of the members. As shown, a recording pen 30 is supported by a .block 36 mounted on a resilient arm 37 carried by a support 31. The pen, which may be fed with ink from a reservoir 34 or comprise a heated marking stylus, can be moved vertically with respect to a record surface 32, such movement being limited in a downward direction by a stop 38 and in an upward direction by: a guide member 52. An actuator arm 40, for manually guiding the pen, has a permanent magnet 41 axially slidable within a barrel 42. A sleeve 43, of non-magnetic material, surrounding a pole piece 44 is urged rearwardly by a spring 45. The pole piece 44 has a concave surface engaging a spherical magnetic keeper member 46 secured to the support 31 providing a magnetic . coupling between the support 31 and actuator which may be released for detaching the actuator 40 from the support 31. In a modification, Fig. 4, a member 62 has a concave recess for a magnetic member 63 having a spherical surrounding portion 65 of non- magnetic material, e.g. glass, plastic or non- magnetic metal. In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), a soft iron member 81 surrounded by a non-magnetic sleeve 82 is mounted on the arm 31 for engagement with a pole piece 85 having a hemispherical head 87. The devices are intended for use in systems as described in Specifications 677,177 and 678,469 wherein data is manually written upon a writing surface at one station, and transmitted to another station where it is automatically transcribed.
