854,106. Window blinds; shutters. LOEWENSTEIN, H. G. April 2, 1957 [Oct. 18, 1956], No. 10668/57. Class 20(3) [Also in Group XXV] A blind, shutter or like shielding assembly comprises a pair of retractable side members 1, each in the form of connected links 3, 6 supporting slats 2 extending between them with the links 3, 6 pivoted at 7 about axes parallel to the length of the slats 2, at least one collapsible strut 8 hinged at 9 to the upper and lower portions of the link and slat assembly 2, 3, 6 with the axes of the strut hinge pins 14 positioned substantially at right angles to the length of the slats 2, and counterbalancing means such as a spiral spring 11 connecting the parts 12 of each strut 8, Fig. 6, or a tension spring (not shown) connecting the hinge pins 14 of respective struts 8 on the top and bottom of each half strut 12, on a weight mounted on an arm projecting from a half strut 12. To lock the blind in any desired position, a spring-loaded plunger (not shown) mounted on one hinge leaf 13 and projecting through a hole therein is inserted into one of a ring of holes 17 in the other hinge leaf 13. To withdraw the plunger, a cranked arm 20 is rotated on which is wound an operating cord 18. An alternative form of strut shown in Fig. 9 has telescoping tubes 23, 24, friction-engaged to dispense with a locking device. Instead of the form shown in Fig. 2, the slats 2 may be supported between alternate links 3 and 6 and have longitudinal weather excluding extensions or may be hinged directly together adjacent their front and rear edges alternately, the links 6 being optionally omitted.
