Abstract

The water content of a SiO2 pigment which contains bound water is reduced by reacting with an inorganic acid halide, preferably a halide of an element of Group III to VI and of periods 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 of the periodic table in amount 2-200%. Halides are:-SiCl4, TiCl4, ZrCl4, SnCl4, AlCl3, BCl3, SbCl3, VCl3, VCl5, PCl5, POCl3, AsCl3, AsCl5, and corresponding bromides, fluorides, or iodides, SO2Cl2, SOCl2, and halides of Ge and Nb. The reaction should be in the absence of liquid water and the free water content may be reduced below 2% by heating at 100 DEG C., or above. The bound water content may also be reduced by heating to above 350 DEG C. The silica pigment is finely-divided, amorphous, porous, hydrated SiO2 flocs precipitated from alkali metal silicates containing in excess 80% SiO2, 1 mole bound water per 3-9 moles SiO2, and up to 10% free water, and having an average ultimate particle size below 0.1 micron and surface area 10-600 sq. m./grm. The pigment may also contain less than 1.75% alkali metal and up to 10% alkaline earth metal, zinc, or aluminium as oxide. The reaction may be effected by passing vapours of the halide through a bed of silica, or by heating the halide with SiO2 dispersed in a, preferably water-immiscible, solvent, e.g. CCl4, CHCl3, CH2Cl2 or C2H4Cl2, under reflux at 40-200 DEG C. The halide reacts with bound water to yield a silica pigment containing the element bound as halide, or oxide, groupings with elimination of HCl. A neutral, hydrophobic, pigment may be obtained by heating the SiO2 containing the element halide with NH3 or an amine, e.g. dimethyl, or diallyl, amine, in the latter case preferably in the presence of pyridine, to form amide groups. Alternatively, the silica pigment may be heated in air at above 100 DEG to 900 DEG C. to remove some of the halide groups. The SiO2 may be used as pigments in natural and synthetic rubbers, silicones, "Teflon" (Registered Trade Mark), and greases, and a number of compositions are specified.
