Abstract
853,930. Utilizing energy of radiations. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO. Dec. 10, 1958 [Dec. 16, 1957], No. 39898/58. Class 39(4). A radioactive battery comprises an ampoule of dielectric material provided with a conductive coating on its inner surface and enclosed in a conductive casing, a conductive lead connected to the coating and extending through the ampoule and the casing, and a radioactive material in the ampoule. In the Figure a glass container 28 has an internal coating, preferably of silver, connected to a lead wire 26 and is enclosed by a case 10, which may be of brass. The space between the container and the case is filled with conductive material such as aluminium powder. The glass container has a filling of radioactive material which is preferably krypton 85 but may be chlorine 36, xenon 133, xenon 135, any organic compound of carbon 14, or a compound of sulphur 35 such as sulphur dioxide. Two curies of krypton 35 will give a current of 2 microamps at 10,000 volts. The thickness of the glass should be small enough to allow radiation to pass through it but thick enough to prevent radiation being scattered back through it. A metal container covered with insulation such as polystyrene may be used instead of the glass container.
