In a rotary cutter for a log barking machine,. the cutter arms 38 are mounted in resilient bushings 46 in pivots which lie at an angle YY to the longitudinal axis XX of the machine so that the arms move in the direction of the entering log as they pivot. The arms are tipped with blades 40 of wear resistant material such as carbide steel and are made of light material such as aluminium to reduce their inertia and prevent them from rebounding from the log. The arms are loaded by springs 44 connected by individual adjusters 45 to a ring 30 which has a turnbuckle 58 and position indicator for angular adjustment of the ring within the inner and outer flanges 22, 24 of the main drum 20 so that the springs are collectively adjustable. The angle between the spring axis SS and the arm axis RR may initially be less than 90 degrees so that the moment arms about YY decreases as the spring becomes increasingly stressed or, to avoid high prestressing of the spring, the angle may initially be more than 90 degrees so that the moment arm increases until RR and SS become perpendicular to each other.
