Abstract

853,403. Resilient mountings; frictional vibration dampers. BARRY CONTROLS Inc. April 7, 1959, No. 11711/59. Class 108(3). A resilient support for heavy machinery comprises a load carrying member 4 Fig. 2 resiliently constrained in vertical and horizontal directions and having friction dampers 27 resiliently held in contact with vertical and horizontal friction surfaces 31 to provide friction damping in all planes of movement. The member 4 is of channel section with side flanges 5 braced by transverse walls 7 forming a housing for a helical spring 11 which provides the vertical resilience. Cylindrical rubber buffers 21 Fig. 1 located by vertically disposed angles 19 welded to the base plate 17 provide resilience in the horizontal direction. The friction dampers 27 are located between opposed surfaces of the angles 19 and are resiliently held by bolts 34 attached to the base plate 17 and carrying adjustable springs 33 with end caps 37b engaging the dampers 27. In operation friction damping is provided by rubbing of the vertical surface 31 on the walls 7 in the vertical and horizontal transverse direction. Damping in the horizontal longitudinal direction is provided by rubbing of the horizontal surface 31 on the base plate 17. In modifications the rubber cushion 23 Fig. 3 may be hollow and have radial pins 24 to provide a lower horizontal stiffness. The unit may also comprise more than one spring 11 and may have guide rods 54 Fig. 4 with heads 60 engaging flanges 51 to prevent inadvertent disassembly.
