Abstract
853,117. Railway track packing machines. PLASSER, F., and THEURER, J. Sept. 12, 1958 (Sept. 19,1957], No. 29299/58. Class 104 (2). Apparatus for a track packing machine having tools 4 which are movable in opposite directions and are mounted in pairs opposite one another on a vertically adjustable tool carrier 2 and also having a vertically adjustable support, a piston 13, for the tool carrier which rests on the support in the working position, the depth to which the tools penetrate into the ballast being adjustable by means of the support characterized in that adjustment of the support for the tool carrier is controlled automatically by the working tools and is effected over a range limited by the maximum and minimum necessary depths of penetration of the tools. The tools 4 are pivoted to holders vibrated by an eccentric shaft 6 and are pivoted to cylinders 7 on the tool carrier. The tool carrier is vertically adjustable on columns 3 in a chassis 1 mounted on wheels to run on rails 11. Fixed pistons 81 divide the cylinders into two chambers 71, 7<SP>11</SP> and fluid from a reservoir 171 is fed via a pipe 9 or 10 to move the tools apart or together. The cylinders slide over the fixed pistons. Initially the tools are lowered to the greatest depth of penetration, the tool carrier then resting on a flange on a screw 16 adjustably positioned in the piston 13 moving in a cylinder 14 on the chassis. Maximum excess pressure in the chambers 7<SP>11</SP> is preset by adjusting a spring 22 acting on one end of slide valve 21 in a valve 20 which normally cuts off the supply of fluid to the pipe 24 supplying fluid to the cylinder 14. The valve 20 is connected to the pipe 10 and a non-return valve 25 passes fluid from the cylinder 14 to the pipe 10 which has a return pipe to the reservoir, when the pressure in the chamber 7<SP>11</SP> increases sufficiently to move the slide valve against the action of the spring, fluid enters the pipe 24 and flows to the cylinder 14 raising the piston 13 and hence the tool carrier rises until the tools reach the lower level of the sleepers the piston then striking an abutment of the cylinder. If the tools are synchronously operated the depth of penetration into the ballast may depend on the spacing of the tools. If the tools are asynchronous individually movable, then the depth of penetration may be regulated by the resistance occurring depending on the actual degree of consolidation of the ballast. The magnitude of the pressure of the tools may also depend on the depth of penetration and/or spacing of the tools.
