1358762 Ballast tamping machines F PLASSER 8 June 1971 [8 June 1970] 19389/71 Heading E1G A ballast tamping and consolidating machine includes a tamping tool for penetrating the ballast which is non-rotatable about its longitudinal axis and which can be pivoted about a horizontal axis to tamp the ballast beneath a sleeper, and a vibratable consolidating tool for introduction into the same crib as the tamping tool to rest on the ballast's surface, and means for vibrating, raising and lowering and pivoting the tamping tool. The tamper 1, Fig. 1, may be separate from the consolidater 16 and received in a slot 20 in the consolidator, or it may be integral therewith. In the latter case, the tamper and consolidator may be in the form of a 'T' sectioned member or, Figure 3, a number of tampers 34 may be eccentrically attached to vibratable rollers 33 having rocker arms 36, 37. The device of Figure 3 comprises a unit of six rollers 33, with three rollers on each side of a rail line, mounted on a frame 40 adjustable in length through a piston and cylinder 44.
