Abstract

A composition suitable for use as a moulding, casting, potting, adhesive or laminating composition and curable to a resin when heated to 120 DEG -180 DEG C. comprises a mono-epoxide, a dianhydride and a dihydric alcohol; the amount of dianhydride being such as to provide 0,5-1,0 anhydride groups per epoxide group and the amount of dihydric alcohol being such as to provide 0,1-0,5 alcoholic hydroxyl groups for each anhydride group. Curing of the composition is accelerated by a catalyst containing at least one amino group. Examples disclose moulding composition comprising (1), (3) (5), (7), (9) and (11)-(14) phenyl glycidyl ether, pyromelletic dianhydride, bis (b -hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (or propylene glycol, 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxypropoxy) phenyl] propane, diethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, ethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, tripropylene glycol or polypropylene glycol), and diisopropylamine; (4) glycidyl p-toluate, pyromellitic dianhydride, neopentyl glycol and dicyandiamide; (6) phenyl glycidyl ether, cyclopentanetetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, polythylene glycol and diisopropyalmine; (8) glycidyl benzoate, pyromellitic dianhydride, 2, 2-bis [4-(2-hydroxypropoxy) phenyl] propane and diisopropylamine; (10) phenyl glycidyl ether, pyromellitic dianhydride and 2, 2-bis [4-(2-hydroxy-propoxy) phenyl] propane; (15) 1, 4-dichloro-2, 3-epoxybutane, pyromellitic dianhydride, polyethylene glycol and N, N-dimethylaminomethyl phenol; (16) the mono-epoxide of 3-methylenecyclobutane carbonitrile, pyromellitic dianhydride and 2, 2-bis [4-(2-hydroxy propyl) phenyl] propane; (17) phenyl glycidyl ether, the dianhydride of 1, 2, 4-tricarboxy-3-carboxy methyl cyclopentane, 2, 2-bis [4-(2-hydroxypropoxy) phenyl] propane and diisopropylamine; (18) phenyl glycidyl ether, 1, 4, 7, 8-tetrachloro [2, 2, 2,] bicyclo-7-octene-2,3,5,6-tetracarboxylic dianhydride and diisopropylamine; (18) phenyl glycidyl ether, pyromellitic dianhydride, 2, 2 bis [4-(2 hydroxyethyl) phenyl] propane and N, N-dimethybenzylamine. Other epoxides specified are glycidyl ethers of aliphatic alcohols and mono-epoxidized silicone resins. Other catalysts specified are p, p1-methylenedianiline, benzylamine, tert-butylamine, ethylenediamine, aniline, nicotonic acid, the tris (2-ethylhexanoate) of 2, 4, 6-tris (dimethylaminomethyl) phenol and glutamic acid. The invention of Specification 852,524 is disclaimed.
