Abstract
Resins are prepared by reacting an olefinic a , b -unsaturated aldehyde with pentaerythritol at a temperature above 40 DEG C. and in the presence of an acid activated sub-bentonite clay as catalyst, filtering the reaction mixture to remove solid matter and vacuum distilling the resulting substantially solid free reaction mixtures a , b -unsaturated aldehydes preferred for use in the present invention are those having less than eight carbon atoms and their halogen substitution products, e.g. acrolein, a -chloro-acrolein, a -methyl-acrolein, a -ethyl acrolein, a -ethoxy acrolein, crotonaldehyde, a -chlorocrotonaldehyde, and a -methyl crotonaldehyde. The sub-bentonite clays are preferably activated with sulphuric or hydrochloric acid and the products are good catalysts for the preparation of A-stage resins, but slow polymerization catalysts. The A-stage resins may be cured with acid catalysts such as sulphuric acid, p-toluenesulphonic acid, benzenesulphonic acid, mixed alkanesulphonic acids, boron trifluoride, aluminium trichloride, and diethyl sulphate. Several examples of the preparations of the resins are included in the Specification. The products are suitable for making laminates and moulded articles.
