Abstract
A polymer of a C2-C4 mono-olefine, such as ethylene, propylene, butene-1, or isobutylene or a copolymer thereof, e.g. isobutylene-styrene copolymer, is admixed with from 0,5 to 5,0 moles of sulphur, from 0,001 to 0,1 moles of a Group I or II metal salt of phosphorodithioic acid, and from 0,5 to 5,0 moles of phosphorus trichloride, per mole of polymer and heated to above 140 DEG C. and preferably below 250 DEG C., and the resultant mass treated with steam at between 110 DEG C. and 200 DEG C. Polymers of low molecular weight, e.g. polyisobutylene of MW from 100 to 2000, may be used and the sulphur and phosphorus trichloride are added to a mixture of the polymer and metal phosphorodithioate or alternatively the phosphorus trichloride is added preferably portionwise to a mixture of the polymer, sulphur and metal phosphorodithioate. The phosphorodithioic acid is derived from the reaction of phosphorus pentasulphide with an alcohol or phenol such as ethyl, isobutyl, octyl, capryl alcohols, 4-methyl-2 pentyl alcohol, cyclohexanol, dodecanol, isopropyl, diisobutyl and heptyl phenols, ethylene chlorohydrin and 2, 4, dichlorophenol or mixtures thereof. The products are light coloured and are used as additives for lubricating oil.ALSO:Phosphorodithioic acids are prepared by the reaction of phosphorus pentasulphide with alcohols or phenols. Ethyl, isobutyl, octyl, capryl alcohols, 4-methyl-2-pentyl alcohol, cyclohexanol, dodecanol, isopropyl, diisobutyl and heptyl phenols, ethylene chlorohydrin and 2-4-dichlorophenol and a mixture of carpyl, 4-methyl-2-pentyl and cyclohexyl alcohols are specified. Salts with Group I and Group II metals are described.
