Abstract
852,346. Axial-flow compressors; gas-turbine plant. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd., S. March 27, 1958 [March 27, 1957], No. 10050/57. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXV] A system for a gas turbine engine 1, having an axial flow compressor, comprises means for reducing the fuel supply at the onset of surge conditions when a quantity, representing the ratio between the angular acceleration of the turbine and the pressure at the exit of the compressor, exceeds a predetermined value which is a function of the angular velocity of the turbine and the compressor inlet temperature. A tachometer generator provides an electrical signal indicative of the speed in line 2, whilst a temperature-responsive pick-off at the compressor intake provides a signal in line 3, and a pressure-responsive device at the compressor outlet affords a signal in line 4. These signals are combined in a function-generating device 5, the output of which is applied to a differential 7. A differentiating device 6 provides a signal proportional to the acceleration for application to a second element of the differential. The output from the device 7 is applied to an amplifier 9 for controlling a normally-open valve in the fuel system 10.
