Abstract
852,285. Binaural systems. TELEFUNKEN G.m.b.H. Dec. 17, 1956 [Dec. 16, 1955], No. 38392/56. Class 40 (4). The outputs of two spaced microphones are added and differenced, the resulting signals being fed over separate transmission channels to a circuit where the original signals are reproduced. A non-directional microphone may feed one of the channels in an additive sense. The outputs of microphones M and M 1- M4, Fig. 1, are added and applied to transmission channel I. The outputs of M2 and M4 are phase reversed at U2 and U4 before combination with the outputs of M1 and M3 in a second transmission channel II. Channels I and II are combined to feed loudspeaker I. Channel II includes a further phase-reverser UE before combination with channel I to feed loud-speaker L2. M3 and M4 have their outputs attenuated at D3 and D4 to a varying extent so that the effective position of the sound source can be varied. In Fig. 3 all the microphone circuits in channel II have variable attenuators, the potentiometer being varied according to whether the effective source of the sound is to be to the right or left of the centre line. Two microphones placed close together having a spherical and a polar response, respectively, may also be included in the system.
