A machine for planting seedlings supplied to the machine in containers each containing a seedling in soil comprising a number of troughs 32 each shaped to receive a cartridge and mounted on a transverse shaft 26 guided in slots in cam plates 7 attached to an endless band or chain the arrangement being that each trough is in a horizontal position to receive a container and as it moves round it is tilted to enter the furrow and then erected to assume a vertical position and lifted out of the furrow. Furrow opening and closing means are provided. As shown in Fig. 10, each trough is mounted on a bush 31 provided with an abutment 33 which engages a stop 34 on sleeves 29 fixed to shaft 26. Shaft 26 carries a crank arm 35 with a follower 36 which engages in a cam slot on the frame of the machine. At the beginning of the planting operation arm 35 is swung upwardly by the follower and cam slot tilting the stop 34 downwards allowing the trough to tilt to deposit the container in the ground. A lever 43, (Fig. 5) is pivoted on each cam plate 7 and locates the shaft 26 in slots 18, 19, (Fig. 20). A follower 45 is rotatably mounted on the arm 43 and engages a cam slot. The shaft 26 is moved in the slots to raise the trough to a vertical position and withdraw it from the furrow. Specification 852,114 is referred to.
