Abstract

852,112. Sheet-delivery apparatus. CHADWICK & SONS Ltd., J. March 5, 1958 [Feb. 15, 1957], No. 5174/57. Class 100(1) Apparatus for retarding and bringing to rest sheets being delivered by gripper-flyers 2 to a stack 7 comprises one or more slotted suction pipes 5 moving in a circular path above the rear edge of the stack and adapted to engage the rear edge of each sheet as it is being delivered, the suction pipes being rotated by epicyclic gearing so that the slots 6 always lie in the same direction relative to the plane of the stack. The axis 4 of the circular path followed by the pipes 5 is disposed at a lower level than the axis of a delivery drum 1 or arcuate part of a delivery conveyer, and when the axes of the drum 1 and of a pipe 5 and the axis 4 are in line, the slot in that tube lies in that line. The pipes 5 are mounted in a rotary end plate 11 and carry pinions 8 meshing with pinions 9 also mounted on the plate 11, the pinions 9 engaging a fixed pinion 10 mounted on the axis 4; the pinions are such that the slots 6 have no movement relative to the axes of the pipes 5. At the opposite end to the plate 11 the pipe ends move over a circular plate having an arcuate groove to which suction is applied, so that as a pipe end moves over the groove suction is applied to the pipe during the period it is engaging the tail end of a sheet. The speed of the pipes 5 along their circular path is less than the speed of the grippers 2 so as to cause the suction to retard the sheets. The stack is automatically lowered and may be divided into counted batches by opening the grippers earlier than normally so as to displace one sheet relatively to the stack after a predetermined number have been delivered.
