Abstract

852,028. Nuclear reactors : handling materials in radioactive environment. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO. Ltd. Sept. 2, 1957 [Sept. 12, 1956], No. 27916/56. Class 39(4). A fuel element carrier which is positioned beneath a selected vertical fuel element channel in a reactor core by apparatus disclosed in Specification 852,027 to permit elements to be introduced into or removed from the channel, comprises a cylindrical magazine 1 rotatably supported on a base 4 by rollers 3, the base 4 having rail wheels 5. Tubular fuel element compartments 2 are circularly disposed around the magazine, each compartment having a vertical slot 7 for receiving the nose 8 of an arm 9 whereby the arm may be raised to the chain-line position to lift a fuel element 13 by means of a piston 31, the fuel element being supported within the fuel element channel by pawls 30. The arm 9 is pivoted to a block 10 slidably in a slot 11 and operated by a link 16 eccentrically connected at 18 to a wheel 19 having six teeth 22. The lowermost tooth 22 is engaged by the arms described in the aforementioned Specification when these arms rotate and thus six engagements are required to rotate the wheel once and cause the arm 9 to be raised and lowered. The wheel shaft 20 rotates an arm 26 through gears 24, 25, the arm 26 cooperating with a series of rollers 27 disposed around the magazine 1 whereby for each revolution of the wheel 19 the magazine is rotated through one step to bring succeeding compartments 2 in turn beneath the same fuel element channel whereby a number of elements 13 may be fed in succession into the channel. In order to remove fuel elements from a channel the pistons 31 are replaced by pistons 23, Fig. 4, having pawls 34, these pistons when lifted causing deflection of the fuel-retaining pawls 30 and when retracted withdrawing the fuel element by the latching of the pawls 34 on bars 32 of the element.
