Abstract

The invention comprises solid stable diazonium compounds which correspond to the general formula: <FORM:0851858/IV(b)/1> in which R represents hydrogen, a halogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy group, R1 represents hydrogen or an alkyl or alkoxy group and N2X represents a diazonium chloride, diazonium sulphate, diazonium borofluoride or diazonium chloride-zinc chloride radical and a process for the preparation thereof wherein a para-amino azo compound of the formula: <FORM:0851858/IV(b)/2> where R and R1 have the meanings given above is diazotised in known manner and the diazonium compound is isolated in the form of its diazonium chloride, diazonium sulphate, diazonium borofluoride or diazonium chloridezinc chloride double salt. Representative of the specific products of which the preparation is described are zinc chloride-diazonium chloride double salts prepared from 4-amino-21:3-dichloro-41-nitro-1:1-azobenzene and 4-amino-3-chloro-3-nitro-1:1-azobenzene, the diazonium borofluoride prepared from 4-amino-3-chloro-41-nitro-21-methoxy-1:11 -azobenzene, the diazonium sulphates prepared from 4-amino-3-chloro-41nitro 1:11-azobenzene and 4-amino-2-methyl-5-chloro-31-nitro-1-11-azobenzene and 4-amino-3-methoxy-61-chloro-31-nitro-1:11-azo benzene. Para-amino-azo compounds employed as starting materials may be prepared by coupling diazotised o-, m- or p-nitraniline or halogen-, alkyl- or alkoxy substituted derivatives thereof with chloranilines which may be substituted by an alkyl or alkoxy group and do not contain a substituent in para-position to the amino group or their N-methane sulphonic acids, N-sulphonic acids or N-arylsulphonyl compounds and subsequently splitting off the methane sulphonic acid or aryl sulphonyl group.
