Abstract

851,114. Ventilator dampers. FUEL FIRING Ltd., FARNHAM, R. C., and WEBB, E. F. D. Dec. 21, 1956 [Sept. 22, 1955], No. 27127/55.. Class 137 [Also in Group XXIX] A device for controlling the fiow of fluid in a duct 2 comprises a series of parallel flexible blades 1 each pivoted about an intermediate point in its length and arranged in the fully open position to lie axially in the direction of flow as shown at 26 and means operable externally of the duct for varying the curvature of the blades and for forcing the leading and trailing edges of the blades to follow a guided path so as to present in the fully closed position a blade of S-section. This arrangement permits a progressive opening or closing of the duct without creating turbulence. The leading and trailing edges of the blades 1 are provided with pins 6, 7 respectively which project through arcuate slots 8, in actuating bars 9, 10 into blind arcuate slots 11 in the side walls of the duct. The bars 9, 10 pass through slots in the wall of the duct into housings 14, 15 and are interconnected by a centrally pivoted lever 18. The duct is formed with channels 22 forming abutments 23 for the outermost blades in the closed position of the device. The blades are operated manually or hydraulically from outside the duct by a rod 16 extending through a gland 17 and secured to the bar 9. In a modification, the pins 6, 7 pass through arcuate slots in the walls of the duct into slots in the opposite ends of levers mounted on the pivots 3 externally of the duct. The levers and hence the blades are connected for simultaneous operation by a control rod pivoted to a crank arm on each of the pivots 3. The levers, crank arms and control rod are enclosed in a leak-proof box to prevent the escape of fluid from the duct 1.
