Abstract
850,000. Engine turning-gear. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 27, 1959 [June 2, 1958], No. 6897/59. Class 7(5). [Also in Groups XXV and XXVI] An air turbine 78 which may be supplied with air through a duct 81 either from an external source of compressed air through a valve 86 or from the bypass duct 15 of a gas turbine engine through a valve 87 is connected by a splined shaft 74 to a. bevel gear 122. The bevel gear 122 meshes with a bevel gear 131 integral with a hollow shaft 129 which is coupled to a pinion 113 on the engine shaft by an overrunning clutch mechanism 134. This clutch, which provides a drive from the starter to shaft 29 but disengages when the shaft 29 overruns the starter, comprises inner end outer rings 136, 137 between which are arranged ball bearings and sprag elements or rollers.
