Abstract

849,833. Agglutinated fibrous materials. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT-GOBAIN, [formerly PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE SAINTGOBAIN, CHAUNY & CIREY S.A., DES]. March 29, 1957 [April 3, 1956; May 11, 1956], No. 10329/57. Class 140. [Also in Group XXIII] A mat of glass or other thermoplastic mineral fibres (e.g. slag fibres) comprises an autogenously agglomerated mixture of at least two different catagories of fibres having the same chemical composition but different thermoplastic properties, the softening-temperatures of the categories differing markedly from one another. A thermoplastic or thermohardening resin may be incorporated in the mixture. The softening temperatures may differ by 100‹ C. or more. Fibres having the required properties may be obtained by differential collection of fibres emitted by the rotating spinner in the usual method of glass-fibre production. If some fibres are arranged to be collected nearer the axis of the spinner and some fibres farther from it they will have markedly differing softening- temperatures. To obtain mats having cohesion and elasticity a mixture of finer and coarser fibres must be used. To carry out the agglomeration the mixture of fibres is subjected to a temperature between 400‹ and 700‹ C. The agglomerated mat may be shaped by subsequent passage between rollers or calenders. Suitable thermoplastic or thermohardening resins which may optionally be included are polystyrene, melamine-aldehyde resins, polyesters, epoxy resins and phenol formaldehyde; also gums, starch or gelatine. As shown, a mat 6 of fibres passes on conveyer-belt 3 through tunnel kiln 1 having heating means 2-2a on its internal walls. The mat travels from right to left and towards the outlet of the kiln it passes between shaping rollers 4-5. Specification 827,411 is referred to.
