Abstract

A soapless detergent composition contains (a) a per-compound, for example an alkali metal peroxide, percarbonate, perborate, persulphate, perphosphate or perpyrophosphate in an amount 1-25% by weight of the composition, and (b) a salt of a metal of Group IVb of the Periodic Table, suitably a titanium halide, titanyl sulphate, zirconium sulphate or oxychloride, sodium zirconium sulphate/silicate, ammonium zirconium fluoride, or potassium titanyl oxalate, preferably zirconium or thorium nitrate, and particularly potassium titanium fluoride, in an amount 0.02-3%, especially 0.2-1%, by weight of the composition. The composition generally also includes 5-50% condensed phosphates, particularly sodium, potassium and ammonium meta-, pyro-, and tripoly-phosphates, and anionic or non-ionic detergents, or both, for example alkylaryl sulphonates, alkyl sulphates, amidoalkane sulphonates, isethionate esters and ethers, fatty acid monoglyceride sulphates, aliphatic sulphonates, condensates of ethylene or propylene oxide with alkylphenols, fatty acids, alcohols or mercaptans, or fatty acid mono- or di-alkanolamides. Alkali metal sulphates, chlorides, silicates, borates, carbonates and orthophosphates, starch, salts of carboxymethyl cellulose, stabilizers for per-compounds such as magnesium silicate, hydroxyquinoline, salts of nitrilotriacetic and ethylenediaminetetracetic acids, and orthotolyl biguanide, and fluorescent whitening agents may also be incorporated. The compositions may be produced in solid or liquid form (all percentages given above are exclusive of solvents), but in a preferred embodiment ingredient (b) is added to a slurry containing at least the major part of the other ingredients of the composition and the slurry immediately spray-dried.
