Abstract
849,520. Photo-electric devices. LANDIS & GYR A. G. Jan. 7, 1959 [Jan. 8, 1958], No. 673/59. Class 40(3). [Also in Group XL(c)] The speed and direction of rotation of a shaft, e.g. in an electricity meter, are ascertained by apparatus comprising two bistable multivibrators, each having two photo-electrically controlled electronic devices, preferably photo-transistors, the output points of corresponding electronic devices of the two multivibrators being connected by circuits including a resistor, a diode, and the primary winding of a transformer, and the photo-sensitive members associated with the devices being sequentially exposed to a beam of light at a frequency determined by the speed of the shaft, and in an order determined by the direction of rotation. Pulses are produced at one transformer or the other, according to the direction of rotation, at a frequency indicative of the rotary speed. As shown, pairs of phototransistors 1, 2, and 3, 4, are allocated to two multivibrators, and are illuminated by a beam of light parallel to the test shaft 11, in the sequence 1, 3, 4, 2, or the reverse, according to the direction of rotation of disc 12, having slots 13 and being mounted on the shaft 11. Output potentials appear at points A, B, C, D, and points A and C are interconnected by a circuit comprising a resistor R5, a diode G1, and the primary winding of a transformer T1; points B and D are interconnected by a similar circuit. When the disc 11 is rotated in the direction a, point A, as alternate photo-transistors are illuminated, becomes positive with respect to point C, and a train of pulses is produced in the secondary of transformer T1; simultaneously, point D becomes positive with respect to point B but diode G2 prevents an output from transformer T2. When the disc 12 is rotated in the reverse direction r, the pulses appear at T2, the output of Tl being zero.
