Abstract
849,454. Knitting. SWANN & CO. Ltd., A. W., and BOLTON, W. Jan. 30, 1958 [Feb. 11, 1957], No. 4582/57. Class 74 (2). A warp-knitted fabric is patterned by the deliberate production therein, at predetermined dispositions, of the effects (termed " false spots ") produced by abnormally highly-tensioned or slack warp ends. The false spots are provided by periodically increasing or decreasing the tension of selected warp ends, to produce, each time, a local bunching of the wales and so knops fs and associated eyelets o, or a local snarling e<SP>2</SP> of the slackened yarns. In a two-bar fabric, the back guide-bar may be halfset and the front bar fully set; and, of the front bar yarns, alternate pairs may be manipulated to produce the false spots. In the two-bar fabric of Fig. 5, the front bar yarns produce the warp chains cs which are tied together by warp ends e laid in by the back bar; and the false spots fs<SP>3</SP> are produced by periodical slackening of ends e. The resultant raised parts may be brushed to provide a fleecy finish. In the fabric of Fig. 6, the tension of alternate pairs of front bar warp ends is periodically increased to produce false spots f5<SP>2</SP>; and, in addition, by varying the lapping of that bar, there may be provided stripes f, or diamonds, squares, or other geometrical designs. The false spots may be disposed to provide floral designs, all-over effects, mock intarsia patterns, geometrical designs, or designs such as those used in embroidery or lace. The slack loops formed in recovery of normal run-in after extra tensioning of selected ends, serves to produce shadow effects. In the arrangement of Figs. 7 and 8, the tension on warp ends passing under and over tension-bars 6, 5, is increased to or above the normal value, according to pattern requirements, by the raising of members 13, through hooks 13b of which pass individual warp ends or small groups thereof. The members 13 are raised by lugs 28 on a pattern chain 26, driven from the main pattern drum, the lugs acting through bell-crank levers 30 and cords 31 on spring-returned reciprocatable rods 18, each of which is connected with a member or members 13 through a pin or pins 17 and cords 15 passing over pulleys 19. Alternatively, selected yarn ends may be supplied from reels or bobbins, instead of from the warp beam, and the rotational speed of these reels or bobbins controlled.
