Abstract
849,399. Garden shears. WARD & PAYNE Ltd. April 20, 1959 [Oct. 28, 1958], No. 34417/58. Class 30 The blades 1, 2 of garden shears have cutting edges 13 formed by the junction of inner faces 10 with bevelled sides 12 which are of greater thickness than the non-cutting side 11 of the blade, the crosssection of the blade tapering towards the non- cutting side. The outer face 8 of each blade, from the point 7 to the tip 9, is ground back and the blade bevelled at 12 to leave a concentration of metal behind the cutting edge 13 which prevents separation of the blades by the material to be cut. The inner faces of the blade which are in face-toface contact at the pivot (see Fig. 4), are hollow ground (see Fig. 5) and the blades are given on 'twist' to ensure cutting point contact, only, of the cutting edges. The blades are preferably forged, the tangs 5 being set back on the handle side of the pivot to form a closed joint with shoulders 20 which meet when the shears are closed. The nut engaging the pivot is adjustable or riveted.
