Abstract
Sulphuric acid is removed from the sulphonation products of alkylated aromatic hydrocarbons by adding sodium sulphate, water and a water-immiscible ether to the product, whereby the mixture separates into two phases, one of which comprises a mixture of ether and the alkyl aryl sulphonic acid, substantially free of sulphuric acid, while the other phase comprises aqueous sodium bisulphate. The sulphonic acid, so obtained, when neutralized with alkali gives an alkyl aryl sulphonate having an inorganic salt content of less than 2% by weight. In an example, a mixture of alkyl benzene sulphonic acids, obtained by alkylating benzene with C10-C13 olefines, is sulphonated with oleum. The mixture of sulphonic acid is partly deacidified by water-washing. The washed mixture, which stlil contains about 10% by weight of sulphuric acid, is stirred with di-isopropyl ether and an aqueous solution of sodium sulphate. The mixture is allowed to separate into two layers; and the lower layer is discarded. The ethereal sulphonic acid mixture is neutralized, while cooling, by adding an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The ether is then distilled off; and a product is obtained which contains 1,7 per weight of sodium sulphate, based on sodium alkyl benzene sulphonate.
