Abstract

848,594. Grinding. CLEWS, C. H. June 8, 1959 [June 19, 1958], No. 19719/58. Class 60. A press tool punch 4 is made by a method in which a hardened and tempered blank is presented to the radial face of a grinding wheel with the axis of the blank extending chordally of the wheel, the blank being rotated about its axis in the arrowed direction during grinding, the direction of feed being either axially of the blank or parallel to the axis of the wheel. The sweptout radius of the shoulder of the punch may be varied by adjusting the distance 9 between the rotational axes of the wheel and punch, and back taper may be provided by slightly inclining the axis of the blank to the plane containing the radial face of the wheel. The method ensures that all grinding lines on the punch are helical as shown in Fig. 4.
