Abstract
The invention comprises a method for making tetrahalomethanes of general formula XYCZ2 where X, Y and Z are fluorine, bromine or chlorine by reacting a carbonyl halide of general formula <FORM:0848561/IV(b)/1> , with a metalloid pentahalide of general formula MQmZ5-m or the components MQ3 and Z2 thereof, where Q is a halogen of less atomic weight than Z, m is O or 3, and M is a Group V metalloid having +3 and +5 valences, such as, for example, phosphorous, arsenic, antimony and bismuth. The nature and proportion of the products depends on the initial reactants and on the reaction conditions. The reactions are usually conducted by placing the reactants in an autoclave and heating to a temperature between about 50 DEG C. and about 500 DEG C. Suitable pressures are between about 1 and about 100 atmospheres. The ratio of metalloid halide to carbonyl halide may be between about 0,3 : 1 and 20 : 1. Suitable carbonyl halides are COCI2, COF2, COCLF, COFBr, and COBr2, and suitable pentahalides are PCI5 PCI2F3, PF5, PBr5, and PF3Br2. Tetrahalorethanes specified are CCL4, CCI2F2, CCI3F, CFCI2 Br, CCI2Br2 Br2F2, and CF3CI, Examples are given of the preparation of some of the compounds and also of a cyclic process for the preparation of carbon tetrachloride by reacting carbon monoxide with chlorine to form phosgene, reacting phosphorous trichloride with chlorine to form phosphorus pentachloride, reacting the said phosgene and phosphorus pentachloride together to form carbon tetrachloride and phosphoryl chloride and reacting the phosphonyl chloride so formed with carbon monoxide to regenerate phosphorus trichloride.
