Abstract

848,199. Handling radioactive materials. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 5, 1956 [Feb. 8, 1955], No. 14257/58. Divided out of 3707/55. Class 39(4). Equipment for handling and processing radioactive substances comprises a circular inert gas-filled chamber 1 connected to a personnel corridor 3 by a normally-closed gas-tight door 4. A circular rotatable table 14 within the chamber has handling and processing equipments 38 ... 44 which are brought progressively before a front-window 12 in the chamber wall 1a having glove ports 13, 13a. The radioactive substance is introduced into the chamber through a tunnel 25 having movable end closures 26, 27, the substance being initially placed in a fume cupboard 20 and moved therefrom through a door 29a by glove ports 30 in a chamber 23. The corridor 3 permits access to the equipments 38 ... 44 and is entered through an airlock and water wash, Fig. 3 (not shown). In a modified arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), the tunnel 25 is replaced by a further chamber having glove ports and the table 14 has a number of processing gas-filled containers interconnected by sealable hatches, each container having a a transparent wall and glove ports registering with the ports 13, 13a, the radioactive material being transferred by the double gloves from one container to the next as the table is rotated.
