Abstract

A stable pigment dispersion is made by milling together, in the presence of an aqueous liquid, a coloured or fluorescent pigment and a synthetic linear polyester in the form of fine particles. The polyester particles are preferably those of polyethylene terephthalate having a particle size of 5-100 microns and made by the process of Specification 830,372. The Specifications contain long lists of inorganic and organic pigments and fluorescent pigments and these may be used in admixture with a white pigment (e.g. titanium dioxide) or an extender, (e.g. barium sulphate). The aqueous liquid is preferably just water but may be an aqueous solution of alcohol, acetone or urea. Dispersion is preferably effected by gravel milling the ingredients followed by sieving to remove the gravel. The pigment dispersions are especially useful for the mass colouration of linear polyesters or polyamides but may also be used, in the form of an aqueous paste to coat paper, card or textiles. In examples (1) and (18) an aqueous paste of polyethyleneterephthalate particles is gravel milled with copper phthalocyanine in the presence of water, and after sieving, the dispersion is dried, ground to a fine powder and mixed with polyethylene terephthalate chips which are afterwards melt spun into fibres or injection moulded; (2)-(15) An aqueous paste of polyethylene terephthalate particles is gravel milled in the presence of water with various pigments and the resulting aqueous dispersions mixed with polyethylene terephthalate or polyhexamethylene adipamide chips which are thereafter dried and melt spun; (16) and (17) Aqueous dispersions of polyethylene terephthalate particles and various pigments are mixed with casein size and the compositions brushed on to a card or sprayed or printed on to paper. Specifications 313,094, 436,957, 698,200, 705,928, 797,046, 799,352 and 799,607 also are referred to.
