Abstract

847,888. Percussive tools. MUTHMANN, F., [trading as MUTHMAN, F. [firm of]]. July 17, 1958 [July 20, 1957], No. 23000/58. Addition to 805,678. Class 124. A percussive drill as described and claimed in the parent Specification has the percussive mechanism and the drive combined to form a unit to be mounted on the driving'motor and the drill spindle is subjected to the action of a spring operating to disengage the teeth on two notched discs. As shown, a drill spindle 5 has a hollow portion 13 supported in a bearing 6 and carries a disc 22 having teeth 24 which engage teeth 25 on a disc 23 fixed to a bush 15, the spindle ending in one half of a dog-clutch. An electric motor has a shaft 7 which drives, through gears 8, 9, 11, a gear 12 on a shaft 14 which carries the second half of the dog clutch and is rotatable in the hollow spindle. The wheel 12 is held by a pin 16 against the bush 15 and the other end of its shaft 14 abuts a helical spring 27 which urges the spindle 5 away from the wheel 12 and so tends to disengage the teeth 24 and 25. An adjusting nut 4 on the front of the casing 2 varies the distance between a thrust bearing 33 and a collar 43 on the nut to vary the amount of engagement of the teeth 24, 25 and thus the force of the blow when the teeth are engaged by pressure of the bit against the work. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the spindle is supported in bearings before and behind the wheel 12 which is mounted on the spindle and the helical spring is situated between the discs on the spindle and the driving wheel.
